How this calculation works
The equivalent monthly growth factor is (1 + r/m)^(m/12), where r is the nominal annual return as a decimal and m is the selected compounding frequency. Contributions are added at the selected point each month. Annual contribution increases apply every 12 months. Today’s-money value divides the final balance by (1 + inflation)^years.
A worked example
R12 000 saved initially at 0% with R1 000 added monthly for one year ends at R24 000. With positive growth, paying at the start of each month gives each contribution an extra month to grow.
Assumptions & limitations
- Returns, inflation and contribution increases are constant assumptions, not forecasts. Negative returns are supported above −100%.
- Monthly equivalent growth interpolates annual or quarterly compounding; actual product crediting rules may differ.
- Taxes, investment fees, withdrawals, product limits and market volatility are excluded. Investment returns are not guaranteed.
